Swords

  1. Afghan Khyber/Yataghan 19th century sword, 57cm single edged, T-shaped cross-section blade, 5cm wide at handle running down to point, 9.5cm walrus ivory grip, approx. 1 x 1cm broken off edge of grip, otherwise VGC. Brown leather scabbard with engraved, brass binding; leather broken in a couple of places. $ 450.00
  2. British Infantry Officers sword, 1895/97 pattern, GRV, nickel plated steel basket hilt/hand guard with Kings Crown and GRV cipher, wire bound fish skin covered grip, 83cm blade, HW (Henry Wilkinson) brass proof mark, used from 1854-1905, within the Star of David at the ricasso on one side and HENRY WILKINSON PALLMALL LONDON etched on the other side, hilt stamped 0 over 129, two arrows and an inspectors stamp on edge of blade, next to hilt, some surface rust on hilt and scabbard has been very badly recovered with leather, blade in overall good condition. $ 300.00
  3. British Light Cavalry sword, 1821 pattern, wire bound fish skin grip, slightly curved blade, PROVED. brass proof mark within the Star of David at the ricasso on one side and J.R.Thomson on the other, blade engravings very dull, some wear to fish skin on grip, minor surface rust on blade, backpiece and scabbard, scabbard with a couple of tiny holes and a few small dents, otherwise VGC. $ 400.00
  4. British Royal Artillery Officers sword, appears to have had the proof stamp hole filled and blade plated, no etching, maker or number visible, fine leather grip, not regular fish skin, in leather scabbard with sword frog, with leather sword knot, housed in a green rifle case with owners name and rank written on, VGC. This sword belonged to Colonel Hugh Hardingham, Commanding Officer of the Natal Mounted Rifles and has his name stamped on the bar of the hilt and initials into the back strap, mentioned numerous times and photos of him in the book History of the Natal Mounted Rifles, see my Uniforms, Headgear and Badges - South Africa sections for other items belonging to Colonel Hardingham. $ 425.00
  5. Cambodian sword with leather hilt and guard, brass pommel, note attached to this sword when I bought it from an old collection, reads Cambodian/French Indo China 19th Century with cut down French heavy cavalry blade, no scabbard, VGC. $ 475.00
  6. Ethiopian 19th century Gurade sabre, 81cm/32 inch curved European blade, right side etched with Ethiopian writing, arms/war trophy, floral designs and Lion of Judea next to hilt, with manufacturer name, M.KEVORKOFF & Cie HARRAR stamped into blade, left side of blade etched with Crown and floral designs and Ethiopian Emperor Menelik II next to the hilt, grip appears to be horn, large coin set on top of grip, no scabbard, VGC. $ 495.00
  7. French 1845 Infantry Officers sword, 76cm double fullered blade, no markings on blade, ornate guard embellished with floral infill between bars, plain brass pommel cap, short floral engraved brass back strap, brass twisted wire bound horn grip, single suspension ring steel scabbard with a pronounced drag, blade in excellent condition, scabbard, guard and grip in VGC. Scarce sword. $ 525.00
  8. German/Saxon Model 1845 fusiliers sword, 46cm/18 inch single edged blade, Crown over FR on one side of blade next to hilt and P.D.L in an oval on the other side, arsenal stampings on edge of guard: 12.A.E.1.111, solid brass grip and guard, appears to be a sword cut down to a sidearm, VGC. $ 180.00
  9. Indian (?) swordstick, leather covered wooden handle with brass studs, 11cm long, leather covered wooden scabbard with brass bullet shell tip, scabbard with three two-tone, light and dark brown leather plaits at top, bottom and near middle, 69cm double edged, tapered, steel blade, slight surface rust, can easily be cleaned off, beautifully made, excellent leather work, one side of leather handle strap torn off right at the end where it was worked onto the scabbard, under the one plait and VGC. $ 250.00
  10. Italian Officers saber, 1914 pattern, 85cm long, would assume this is Artillery or Engineers as it has etched grenades along with coats of arms and trophies, black wooden handle, large hand guard, steel scabbard with two hanging rings, leather straps attached, minor surface rust spot on inside middle of hand guard and tip of sword, otherwise VGC. $ 385.00
  11. Moroccan 19th century Nimcha sabre, 87cm/34 inch slightly curved single edge European blade, carries several distinct stampings, including several triple-dots and the famous eyelashes stamping, the grip is cut and shaped out of Rhino horn, with engraved brass collar, cross guard and D hand guard are forged in one piece with the typical three prongs down curving quillons, each with a top button, no scabbard, this is an original fighting sword all parts original, no replacement parts, VGC. $ 875.00
  12. South African Army Officers sword, stamped WKC Solingen Germany and # 5175, and on the other side the South African coat of arms, wire bound fish skin grips, in brown leather scabbard, drag folded over, some surface rust on inside of hand guard and some plating on blade coming off in places, needs to be re-plated, otherwise VGC. $ 300.00
  13. South African Police Officers sword, stamped WKC Solingen Germany over SAP and # 0162, and on the other side the STAINLESS over the South African coat of arms, wire bound fish skin grips, in brown leather scabbard, with sword frog and two straps, leather sword knot, very scarce, VGC. $ 550.00
  14. Spanish Naval sword, blade engraved with a castle over an eagle and coat of arms on one side and on the other the Spanish Naval emblem of a crowned anchor and the name MARINA ESPANOLA, Fabrica de Toledo Spain, gold plated hilt with crowned anchor on hand guard and wire bound imitation ivory grip, no scabbard, VGC. $ 250.00
  15. Sudanese 19th century Kaskara sword, 81cm/32 inch double edged blade etched on both sides with half-moons, snakes and Egyptian characters, one half-moon has what looks like a 191c in it, steel cruciform hilt with straight diamond section crossguard, cord bound grip and leather bound disc pommel, no scabbard, VGC. $ 375.00
  16. Turkish Naval Officers sword, around 1890 to WWI, black wire bound grip, brass hand guard and knuckle bow flowing into lions mouth, guard with typical hinged flap/catch, three letters stamped into blade and into ferule, blade very shiny, possibly nickel plated, and some wire damage on grip, otherwise VGC. $ 400.00
  17. Unidentified German made cavalry sword, slightly curved 92cm long fullered blade, copper wire bound black grips, made by Isaac Wester & Co of Solingen, who were in business from 1820-90, with their W & CO stamp on the blade, near the hilt, tentatively identified as a mid 19th century Italian cavalry sword, in plated steel scabbard with two hanging rings, scabbard engraved Trooper C.E.Lake No.2845 C.M.P., blade in very good condition, hilt with some minor surface rusting, some spots of plating missing on scabbard, overall VGC. I initially thought this could be a Trooper of the Cape Mounted Police but am told that they never had so many members in the force. $ 550.00
  18. United States Air Force Academy sabre, with name U.S. Air Force Academy and wings to each side etched into blade on one side, cross guard has the Academy emblem with wings to each side, top of hilt is the globe, showing maps of all continents, nickel plated, made by Bermejo Toledo Spain, appears to be quite old, with some minor surface rust on one side of the steel scabbard, otherwise VGC. $ 350.00

 

Bayonets

  1. Belgian FN FAL Long Type bayonet, ribbed plastic grips, attachment section of hilt cut off, probably carried as a knife, and flash eliminator removed, otherwise VGC. B2 pg.21. $ 35.00
  2. Belgian made South African Police bayonet for the FN 7.62 FAL assault rifle, cross guard ring with extension designed to serve as a flash eliminator, number erased, SAP stamped on pommel, VGC, with black metal steel scabbard. B262. $ 75.00
  3. British Lee Enfield No.4 Mk.II spike bayonet, all steel construction, in steel Mk.I sheath, stamped No.4 Mk.II over a 5, good overall condition. WB232 with WB231 sheath. $ 45.00
  4. British Lee Enfield No.9 Mk.I bayonet with 21cm fullered, single edged blade, steel construction, similar fitting to MC35/12, in black steel sheath, no markings, good overall condition. WB239. (2 in stock) $ 30.00 each
  5. British Lee Enfield No.9 Mk.I bayonet with 21cm fullered, single edged blade, steel construction, similar fitting to MC35/12, in steel sheath, stamped with a P inside a C and numbered 1949, VGC. WB239. $ 30.00
  6. British Pattern 1888 Mk.I bayonet, 2nd type, Crown over E R, over 2 03 stamped into one side of the blade, and arrow over EFD, over crowned 53 E over X on the opposite side, small V on cross guard, scabbard missing its chape, otherwise VGC. WB222. $ 45.00
  7. British Pattern 1888 Mk.I bayonet, 2nd type, Crown over V R, over 7 95 stamped into one side of the blade, some stamps on opposite side but they are not legible, some minor rust pitting and no scabbard, otherwise good. WB222. $ 45.00
  8. British Pattern 1888 Mk.I bayonet, 2nd type, Crown over V R, over 11 92, over SANDERSON SHEFFIELD stamped into one side of the blade, and arrow over WD, over crowned 5 over 23 over X on the opposite side, number 1485 stamped on opposite side of the release button, some minor rust pitting and no scabbard, otherwise good. WB222. $ 45.00
  9. British Pattern 1888 Mk.I bayonet, 2nd type, with oil hole in handle, indecipherable stamp over WILKINSON LONDON stamped into one side of the blade, some rust pitting, one wooden handle partially cracked, black leather scabbard, missing the chape, top mount stamped 191 5 30. WB222. $ 45.00
  10. British Pattern 1888 Mk.II bayonet, with oil hole in pommel, Crown over ER (Edward Rex), over 9 01, over WILKINSON LONDON stamped into one side of the blade and an arrow over a Wilkinson view mark on the other side, another Wilkinson view mark stamped into flat edge of blade, next to muzzle ring, another stamp, ending with an R, just above the oil hole, some minor rusting, sharpening marks on edge and muzzle ring broken.   11. British Pattern 1907 bayonet, on one side of the blade, next to the hilt, a crown over GR, over 1907 over 9 16, over SANDERSON, on the other side, an arrow over crown, over 11, over E, over an X, with a 3 on the hilt between the two wooden grips, in steel mounted scabbard, some minor surface rust on top mount of scabbard, otherwise VGC. $ 95.00
  12. British Pattern 1907 bayonet, on one side of the blade, next to the hilt, a crown over GR, over 1907 over 3 17, over SANDERSON, on the other side, an arrow over 3, and 659 stamped into pommel just below release button, no scabbard, VGC. $ 85.00
  13. British Pattern 1907 bayonet, on one side of the blade, next to the hilt, a crown over GR, over 1907 over 12 15, over SANDERSON, on the other side, a crown/T6/E, over a large X, some rusting on one side and no scabbard, otherwise VGC. $ 65.00

British Pattern 1907 bayonet, on one side of the blade, next to the hilt, a crown over 1907 over 6 09 over JAC, on the other side, an arrow over crown over N35 over an X between two crown over 36 stamps, with M1L.C. over 1168 on the opposite side of the release button, at the top of the handle, no scabbard, some surface rust, otherwise VGC. $ 65.00
  15. British Pattern 1907 bayonet, on one side of the blade, next to the hilt, a crown over 1907 over S294 over WS05 over 2, on the other side, an arrow over crown over some other stamps, in black leather scabbard with metal fittings, VGC. $ 80.00
  16. British Pattern 1907 bayonet, on one side of the blade, next to the hilt, MA over 1907 over 5 42, on the other side, an arrow over XMA, and a G just below the release button, both sides, and in the middle of the shaped section of the handle, in black leather scabbard with metal fittings, bayonet handle either nickel or chrome plated at some stage, retaining about 75 percent of the plating, metal throat painted army green, VGC. $ 85.00
  17. British Pattern 1907 bayonet, on one side of the blade, next to the hilt, an A over 1907 over 1 over 2, on the other side, an arrow over crown, over m, over 5, over XMA, and an arrow inside a U for Union of South Africa, just below the release button, at the top of the handle, in black leather scabbard with metal fittings, scabbard in brown leather frog, bayonet either nickel or chrome plated, comes from the armoury of the South African Railway Police, VGC. $ 95.00
  18. British Pattern 1907 bayonet, on one side of the blade, next to the hilt, a crown over IP over 1907 over 11, with 29 over small crown over 50 over E, on the other side, a small crown over T3 over E, another similar with T6 below, a 22 stamped over a 25, an arrow head over 19, and a large X below, with CLS over OTC over 185 just below the release button, at the top of the handle, in dark brown leather scabbard with metal fittings, VGC. $ 105.00
  19. British Pattern 1907 bayonet, on one side of the blade, next to the hilt, a crown over 1907 over 12 115, on the other side, an arrow over crown over SD/E, three of the same stamps, one on either side of the blade and one slightly higher, with an X between the lower two, with brown leather sheath with metal fittings, scabbard stamped MANGROVITE 42 and an arrow over a B over a W, the handle of the bayonet has been painted a desert sand colour and retains about 60% of this paint, VGC. $ 95.00
  20. British Pattern 1907 bayonet, on one side of the blade, next to the hilt, 1907 over 1, over 42, on the other side, an arrow over crown over 1 L and an arrow, over a large X and smaller MA, no scabbard, slight surface rusting and small chip out of handle wood, otherwise VGC. $ 65.00
  21. British Pattern 1907 bayonet, on one side of the blade, next to the hilt, a Crown over GRI/1907/4 41, over RFI, on the other side, IS/45, some other stamps and a large X, brown leather scabbard, VGC. $ 95.00
  22. British Pattern 1907 bayonet, on one side of the blade, next to the hilt, a Crown over GR/1907/11 18, over WILKINSON, on the other side, an arrow over crown over a large X, SAP (South African Police) stamped into pommel near release button, brown leather scabbard, with original brown leather bayonet frog stamped with SAP and M.Brewer & Co 1915, slight surface rusting, otherwise VGC. $ 165.00
  23. British Pattern 1907 bayonet, on one side of the blade, next to the hilt, a Crown over 1907, over 3 7, over WILKINSON, on the other side, an arrow over crowned A9 over E, and numerous other stamps over a large X, SAP (South African Police) stamped into pommel near release button and into one side of the wooden handle, brown leather scabbard, has been chromed, as used by the State Presidents Bodyguard, some chrome has peeled off, otherwise VGC. $ 125.00
  24. British Pattern 1907 bayonet, on one side of the blade, next to the hilt, a Crown over GR/1907/5/18/23, over WILKINSON, on the other side, an arrow over crown over 2/22/41 over a large X, SAP (South African Police) stamped into wooden grip and into pommel near release button, brown leather scabbard with RE stamped into top mount just below frog stud and into chape at the bottom, and RE over 15 stamped into leather near the stitching, with original brown leather bayonet frog stamped with MADE IN SOUTH AFRICA, slight surface rusting and frog strap broken, otherwise VGC. $ 165.00
  25. Czechoslovakia Model VZ52 rifle folding bayonet, captured in Rhodesia, blade stamped near hinge with a 7, scarce, VGC. $ 35.00
  26. French Model 1874 Gras bayonet with wood and brass hilt, numbered 78059 on quillon and scabbard, Mre d' Armes de St. Etienne Fbre 1879 engraved across flat edge of blade, showing it was made at the St.Etienne armory in February 1879, scabbard appears to have been nickel or chrome plated at some stage and wooden handle has some pitting, otherwise VGC. WB50. $ 95.00
  27. French Model 1886/93/16 bayonet with steel hilt with number G41864, slight surface rust, otherwise VGC. Round black metal sheath with number 622987. WB57. $ 85.00
  28. French Model 1886/93/16 bayonet, with brass hilt and round black metal sheath, number RE69833 stamped into quillon and 739 on sheath, slight surface rust on bayonet and sheath, otherwise VGC. Similar to WB56 but with quillon. The French authorities ordered the removal of the quillon from these bayonets in 1915 and only a few survived the conversion, making them quite scarce. $ 165.00
  29. German Model 1871/84 knife bayonet, PD over ??NESCHLOSS over SOLINGEN on one side of the blade, and 93 B E L(or I) 20 on the one side of the cross guard, lots of surface rust with some pitting, and release button missing. WB80, 81 or 82. $ 25.00
  30. German Model 1884/98 bayonet, 26cm long fullered single edged blade, wooden handle, metal scabbard, frog stud loose, surface rust on scabbard and metal parts of handle, top of handle has two eagle proof stamps, blade sharpened, number 3459 on cross guard, possibly an M41 Portuguese contract made bayonet, good. WB128. $ 55.00
  31. Hungarian/Romanian AKM wire-cutter bayonet with dark red/brown bakelite handle and upswept pommel, black steel scabbard with grey rubber non-conductor insulator sleeve slid over half the length, brown leather wrist strap, in light brown leather frog, scarce, bayonet and scabbard numbered ZF 3249, mint. (A bayonet captured at a terrorist base and been in storage since the 1980s) $ 95.00
  32. Hungarian/Romanian AKM wire-cutter bayonet with dark red/brown bakelite handle and upswept pommel, black steel scabbard with grey rubber non-conductor insulator sleeve slid over half the length, brown leather wrist strap, in light brown leather frog, scarce, bayonet and scabbard numbered ZF 0054, ridge around the release button cracked and scabbard has 2 cm scrape and small dent, otherwise mint. (A bayonet captured at a terrorist base and been in storage since the 1980s) $ 90.00
  33. Italian model 1891 bayonet with 29,5cm fullered single edged blade, wooden handle, all steel scabbard, stamped YK7540 on cross guard, bayonet and scabbard chromed at some time, VGC. WB153 with scabbard on left. $ 95.00

34.  Russian AK47 bayonet with 20cm fullered single edged blade, brown Bakelite handle, no sheath, VGC. Comes from Rhodesia. WB257. $ 45.00

Russian AKM bayonet, orange bakelite handle and sheath, wire cutter fittings, number 037 engraved into both the sheath and handle, small star and 24 at the bottom of sheath and small star and 24-2 on handle, brown leather belt loop and webbing hand strap, minor surface rust where webbing hand strap goes through handle and some rust marks on the strap, otherwise VGC.   2. Russian AKM bayonet, orange painted bakelite handle, wire cutter hole in blade, fittings, used and sharpened, otherwise VGC. WB258. Angolan souvenir. $ 75.00
  3. Russian AKM wire-cutter bayonet with dark red/brown bakelite handle, black steel scabbard with black rubber non-conductor insulator sleeve slid over half the length, light brown leather belt loop and wrist strap, scarce, bayonet and scabbard numbered 2347, mint.   6. South African all metal FN/R1 rifle bayonet in black plastic scabbard, bayonet numbered 235840, point bent, otherwise VGC. $ 30.00
  7. South African all metal FN/R1 rifle bayonet in black plastic scabbard, bayonet numbered 163354, and has M inside U stamp, VGC. $ 40.00
  8. South African all metal FN/R1 rifle bayonet in black plastic scabbard, bayonet numbered 178643 and has M inside U stamp, release leaver loose, otherwise VGC. $ 40.00
  9. South African all metal FN/R1 rifle bayonet in black plastic scabbard, bayonet numbered 314508, VGC. $ 45.00
  10. South African all metal FN/R1 rifle bayonet in black steel scabbard, bayonet numbered 111553 and has M inside U stamp, handle dented, otherwise VGC. $ 45.00
  11. Swedish 1896 bayonet and scabbard, bayonet stamped with EJEAB and anchor on one side of the blade and a crown on the other, L over I14, No 61a and No 94 stamped into the cross guard, made at Eskilstuna, VGC WB175. $ 75.00
  12. Unidentified bayonet scabbard, black leather with brass chape, possibly Italian M.1870, but this one is more pointed, chape stamped 92133 over 14LI, over 3, over 54, top mount has been cut off at some stage and is not with scabbard, otherwise VGC. $ 20.00
  13. United States M1855, 1861 and 1863 pattern socket bayonet, 18 inch blade, stamped US with a large dot above, no scabbard, looks to have been plated at some time, minor rusting visible under plating, otherwise VGC. Similar to WB 241. $ 165.00
  14. United States Model 1917 Enfield bayonet, on one side of the blade, next to the hilt, an exploding grenade next to an X over US, and on the other side 1917 over a W within a circle, surface rust on blade and wooden handles plates missing, bolts in place, otherwise good, black leather sheath with nickel plated fitting, with RE stamped into metal just below frog stud, VGC. WB 246. $ 65.00

 

Knives & Machetes

  1. Diving knife, black plastic handle, blade marked Stainless Steel, no sheath, VGC. $ 10.00
  2. Machete in leather scabbard, typical Commonwealth military style machete and scabbard, but no military marking, just ENOBAR stamped into one side of the blade, bought from an old South African soldier, wooden handle plates fixed with four brass and steel rivets, VGC. $ 65.00
  3. Sudan arm dagger, double edged short dagger, 16cm blade, with leather covered wooden handle, 10.5cm, leather sheath with long leather loop for wearing around upper arm, leather on handle worn through and come loose in spots, otherwise in VGC. WWII souvenir of a South African officer. $ 75.00

 

Traditional African Weapons, Assegais, Spears, Axes, Bows and Arrows

  1. Kenyan quiver of 33 arrows, quiver 47cm long and arrows 51cm long, animal hide quiver, most of the hair worn off, with Cowrie shells decorated belt loop, come apart from the quiver but in one piece, 40 Cowrie shells, each arrow with a barbed metal tip. When I bought this quiver from an elderly lady she told me that her father had brought it home after WWII and had always told the children not to touch the tips because they were poisoned. WWII souvenir of a South African officer. $ 150.00
  2. Shona fighting axe from the Rhodesian/Zimbabwe area, steel head and black wooden shaft, some designs carved into shaft near head, relatively modern, not a very old axe, minor surface rust, otherwise VGC. (I knew the previous owner, a collector, who already had this in his collection when I first met him nearly 30 years ago.) $ 55.00
  3. Swazi throwing assegai (long spear), 175cm/69 inches, short spear point with long wooden shaft and plaited copper and silver coloured wire over the section where spear goes into shaft, relatively modern, not a very old assegai, minor surface rust, otherwise VGC. (I knew the previous owner, a collector, who already had this in his collection when I first met him nearly 30 years ago.) $ 115.00
